Bogus Burger

The following is from for Monday, August 5, 2013:

For $332,000, you might expect a burger to come with fries and a shake.

But it's no ordinary hamburger that two volunteer taste-testers are tucking into in London on Monday. The meat was grown in a laboratory, from cattle stem cells.

Mark Post, whose team at Maastricht University in the Netherlands developed the burger after five years of research, hopes that making meat in labs could eventually help feed the world and fight climate change.

"For the burger to succeed it has to look, feel and taste like the real thing," Post said.

Post and colleagues made the meat from the muscle cells of two organic cows. The cells were put into a nutrient solution to help them develop into muscle tissue, growing into small strands of meat.

It took nearly 20,000 strands to make one 5-ounce patty, which for Monday's taste test was seasoned with salt, egg powder, breadcrumbs, red beet juice and saffron. The project cost €250,000 ($332,000).

Experts say new ways of producing meat are needed to satisfy growing carnivorous appetites without exhausting resources. The animal rights group PETA has thrown its support behind the lab-meat initiative.

"As long as there's anybody who's willing to kill a chicken, a cow or a pig to make their meal, we are all for this," said Ingrid Newkirk, PETA's president and co-founder. "Instead of the millions and billions [of animals] being slaughtered now, we could just clone a few cells to make burgers or chops."

Do you know why we have carnivorous appetites? Because beef has essential nutrients in it that our bodies can’t be healthy without! How will they put the essential nutrients beef provides into this lab chunk of nothing? Farmers and ranchers are constantly under attack for using medicines on their livestock even to keep them from getting sick, something I’d think is humane, and yet activists are speaking out saying that beef is no longer healthy. Don’t tell me you’d rather a eat lab manufactured glob of goo!

Who is still dishing out the argument of climate change? I hate to break it to those who are, but Gore isn’t getting elected President so peddling his debunked agendas isn’t going to get you into the White House. The original stewards of the land are agriculturists because our livelihoods depend on it.

To farmers and ranchers listening, this is WHY we have to speak out for our industry. It’s experiments like these that should make us realize that there is a huge gap between our consumers and producers and it is our job to bridge that gap. It is as simple as inviting people in your town to spend some time on your place so that they know how well cared for, and even pampered to, our livestock is.

Consumers, that’s ALL of us folks, research the things you hear and don’t fall for political propaganda charged by money mongering groups like PETA.

The thought of eating gray, squid like textured bogus burger and calling it beef, reminds me of a plot for a seventies sci-fi film and no, I don't even want fries with that.

Thank you for the rant. I'd love to hear your opinion. - Trinity
