Little Kids, Big Breakfasts and a Ranch Life Ago

It used to be all hay fields in the summer months of July and June.
They'd hope for tall millet and to catch alfalfa mid bloom.
It used to be good horses who'd walk just right and not too slow
but that was little kids, big breakfasts and a ranch life ago.

It used to be her in the summer planting flowers and keeping them tidy.
So meals would be prepared, she'd be up earlier and later than everybody.
She'd spend the evenings patching jeans so no holes ever would show
but that was little kids, big breakfasts and a ranch life ago.

It used to be saving for one kid's college, and having another on the way.
It used to be big gatherings and all the young ones would play.
It used to be a houseful and wrinkles and age marks didn't show
but that was little kids, big breakfasts and a ranch life ago.

It used to be big sheerings and needing more hired men each year.
And when they think back on those times, both him and her shed a tear.
They thought they'd never grow old or away from their home place they'd have to go
but that was little kids, big breakfasts and a ranch life ago.
